Ireland's Love Affair with the Mazda3 Saloon

Irish drivers really do love their saloons. While our counterparts on mainland Europe prefer hatchback and estate models, the humble saloon has traditionally been seen as the default choice. A good looking saloon car can look more premium, they have large boots, and they appear to give a more substantial road presence. We just can't get enough of them!

Over a quarter of all new cars sold so far this year are in the lower/medium C-segment as Irish buyers downsize to smaller, more fuel efficient cars with lower C02 emissions. In a segment normally dominated by hatchbacks, one rising star is the Mazda3 saloon.

Mazda has sold over 430 Mazda3 saloon models this year, making it the second most popular 4-door model after the Toyota Corolla.

One of the reasons behind the success of the Mazda3 is its looks. According to Mazda Dealer feedback; customers arrive into the showroom looking for a hatchback, they tend to be drawn toward the distinctive design of the saloon model: a compact saloon car which gives the impression of a much larger model.

The Mazda3, Ireland's favourite Mazda model, has posted healthy sales growth in 2010 thanks to its acclaimed reputation of reliability. With the new 2010 model, Mazda engineers were keen to maintain the quality and reliability synonymous with the previous Mazda3. The car was tested globally at 20 locations in 11 countries and was driven a total of 175,000km in durability testing.

The most popular engine in the Mazda3 range is the 1.6 diesel. Sitting in the lowest road tax band A (€104 per annum), this diesel unit is the natural choice for Irish drivers offers plenty real-world power and torque, while averaging 4.5L/100km (62mpg)

Chassis and suspension settings in the new model have been optimised to deliver agile handling and superior control through cornering. Drivers and passengers will enjoy greater comfort as engineers focused on improving noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) for a quieter, more refined drive.

Mazda has confirmed it is continuing its scrappage scheme. The Mazda3 is available from €17,995*
