Mazda climbs up the customer satisfaction table

Mazda CX-5 claims 5th place in the top 100 cars Auto Express Driver Power Survey

The Mazda brand jumps to 4th place in the manufacturer leader board from 12th last year

Five Mazda models in the top 100 cars – Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda CX-5, MX-5 and Mazda6

Mazda has shot up the popularity charts with its smart Mazda CX-5 SUV crossover making it into 5th place in the top 100 cars in the UK according to the latest customer satisfaction survey.

The Mazda CX-5, crowned ‘Best Crossover’ in last year’s Auto Express New Car Awards, achieved 89.63% in the Auto Express Driver Power Survey, the largest and most comprehensive poll of car owners in the UK, scoring in the top 50 percent in all categories. The Mazda CX-5 achieved its highest rankings for in-car technology, ease of driving and ride quality categories.

In addition, the Mazda brand has jumped from 12th last year to 4th place. The climb is testament to Mazda’s sixth generation cars, with the Mazda CX-5 achieving pole position in the SUV class. Scores were especially impressive for ‘practicality’ and ‘ease of driving’ categories. The Mazda MX 5, the world best-selling two seater sportscar, contributed to Mazda’s success with a noticeably high score for ‘handling’, while the Mazda3 scored highly in the ‘practicality’ category.

Auto Express polled some 46,000 car owners covering more than 30 manufacturers, over 200 models and some 17,000 cars three years old or under. This year Mazda had five models in the top 100, up from two in 2012, with the Mazda CX-5 peaking at number five.

Its other top performers were the Mazda MX-5, Mazda6, Mazda3 and Mazda2. Brett Hague, Mazda UK & Ireland’s Franchise and Network Development Manager said: “The two models we launched last financial year, the Mazda CX-5 and all-new Mazda6 both performed very strongly and this shows how our SKYACTIV technology platform is resonating with customers.

“It turns Mazda into an environmentally friendly choice for all our customers who now get the best of both worlds – fun to drive with low emissions and without compromising performance. It means you can get from A to B with a smile on your face while still being very efficient.

“While our sixth generation cars are clearly gaining recognition, they have also helped put our dealers back on the map. We have been doing a lot of work with the network in terms of engaging better with customers and listening to their feedback.”

Mazda Ireland managing director Tony Howarth added: “We are absolutely delighted with this result. The Driver Power Survey is completely independent and this shows just how far the Mazda brand has come. It’s great news for the network and I believe there has never been a better time to have the Mazda franchise. There are more great products to come and the network can look forward to a really bright future.”

Auto Express editor in chief Steve Fowler said: “This is an extremely comprehensive survey and we get a larger and larger response each year. Driver Power is very significant both for the car manufacturers and customers and Mazda has made great strides forward over the past 12 months.”

Mazda6 wins prestigious red dot design award

The all-new Mazda6 has been honoured with a 2013 red dot award, capturing the internationally-recognised prize for outstanding product design. It is yet another accolade for Mazda’s striking new flagship and the company’s revolutionary “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme.

The 37-head jury of independent design experts, who judged entries according to nine criteria, honoured the KODO-inspired Mazda6 for qualities such as its high level of design innovation. KODO is Mazda’s award-winning design template for its new generation of vehicles. Inspired by the explosive release of energy observed in animals or athletes springing into motion, KODO symbolises Mazda’s distinctive vitality and agility, providing the perfect complement for the company’s convention-defying approach to fun-to-drive cars. Other prizes it has captured thus far include Auto Bild’s 2012 European Design Award (Mazda CX-5, the first KODO model) and first place in the concept car category at the German Design Council’s Automotive Brand Contest 2012 (Mazda Takeri).

Based on the Takeri concept, the new Mazda6 – the company’s second KODO model – features the full range of ground-breaking SKYACTIV Technology to deliver Mazda’s distinctive Jinba Ittai one-with-the-car feeling. Embodying the Sustainable Zoom-Zoom vision in its most advanced form yet, Mazda’s latest flagship delivers class-leading fuel economy, performance and safety.

“We were aiming with the new Mazda6 to awaken the observer’s senses and turn heads with an uncompromising balance and proportion that instantly makes one want to get in the car and drive,” says Peter Birtwhistle, chief designer at Mazda’s European R&D Centre. “The red dot award for product design is a very prestigious testimony to what we have achieved at Mazda with the bold expressions personified by KODO.”
But there is substance behind those good looks thanks to Mazda’s innovate new SkyActiv Technology. Mazda’s ethos behind SkyActiv Technology is to deliver best-in-class fuel economy, lower emissions without compromising driving performance.

The 2.2-Litre SkyActiv Diesel engine will underpin the success of the car in Ireland. All diesel engines come with i-Eloop; Mazda’s clever new regenerative braking system turning stored kinetic energy into electricity to power the vehicle’s electrical systems. Combined with Mazda’s i-Stop technology, i-Eloop delivers fuel economy improvement of about 10%.

Priced from €28,745, Mazda’s flagship model will be available in Saloon or Tourer body styles.

About the red dot design award
Initiated in 1955 by the Germany-based Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, the red dot design award is one of the world’s largest design competitions. Prizes are granted for product design, design concept and communication design. Mazda and other winners of the “red dot award: product design 2013”, which saw 4,662 entries by 1,865 manufacturers from 54 countries, will receive their awards on 1 July at the Aalto Theatre in Essen. The products themselves have earned the privilege to bear the “red dot” symbol, internationally acknowledged as a seal of design excellence.

Mazda and contemporary art at Milan Design Week

Leverkusen, 26 March 2013. Design is clearly a central element of Mazda’s convention-defying attitude toward automobiles. To celebrate its dedication to the functional beauty, as demonstrated by the award-winning “KODO – Soul of Motion” design of its new generation of cars, Mazda is taking part in Milan Design Week 2013 from 9-14 April. It has set up a special venue in the Italian metropolis, and the all-new Mazda6 with its stunning KODO lines will be there.

Located in Milan’s stylish Zona Tortona district, Mazda Con-Temporary Space (MACS) was conceived as a cultural forum to present contemporary art and design in a variety of forms. Since opening in January, MACS has featured various public exhibitions by Italian artists with “movement” and “soul of motion” as their central themes. The new Mazda6 flagship has been a “permanent” fixture at MACS throughout the exhibition period, which goes until late April.

During Milan Design Week, MACS will host the exhibition Forma Fluens by Giuliana Cunéaz. Designed specifically for MACS, this exhibition uses 3D and HD video installations as well as painted screens, sculptures, photographs and drawings to take the viewer on a fascinating virtual journey through a metamorphic landscape exploring nanotechnology and other forms of science.

“My desire to delve into and capture these types of dynamic transformation processes has much in common with the Mazda approach, which goes beyond merely designing cars,” says Ms. Cunéaz. “It’s about using the KODO theme to create models where aesthetics and technology are united into an overall design that achieves new levels of harmony and emotion.”

About Milan Design Week
Milan Design Week gives artists, companies and other organisations a prime opportunity to present their design work and installations at locations of their choice throughout the city. It evolved out of the “Salone del Mobile”, an annual furniture fair held since 1961. The largest event of its kind in the world, the Salone currently attracts some 2,500 exhibitors and around 300,000 visitors to the Milan fairgrounds.

About “KODO – Soul of Motion”
Developed under the guidance of Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s head of design, the prize-winning “KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme was inspired by the instantaneous movements of animals in the wild. KODO represents the ultimate form of motion, brimming with energy and emotion, and symbolizes Mazda’s devotion to building stunningly fashioned yet exceptionally practical and refreshingly driver-oriented vehicles. Honours bestowed thus far for KODO include Auto Bild’s 2012 European Design Award for the Mazda CX-5 compact SUV, the first KODO production model. The Mazda Takeri, which served as the basis for the all-new Mazda6, also took first place at the German Design Council’s Automotive Brand Contest 2012 in the concept car category.

Mazda has decided to establish the plant in order to respond to increasing demand for models featuring SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and to strengthen its global production footprint. Operations at the new plant will commence in the first half of the fiscal year ending March 2016.

The new transmission plant will be located approximately five kilometers north of Mazda's joint venture production facility, AutoAlliance (Thailand) Co., Ltd. The Nakanoseki district of Hofu Plant will remain the chief production facility for transmissions, but we have decided to establish a second major transmission plant in Thailand's Chonburi Province.
The All-New Mazda6 – A New Dimension to Driving Dynamics

The all-new Mazda6 Saloon and Tourer on sale from 25 January 2013, priced from €28,745 to €38,895 on-the-road (RRP)

Powered by Mazda’s award-winning SKYACTIV 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines with the choice of six-speed manual and automatic SKYACTIV transmissions

SKYACTIV technology suite to set new benchmarks for fuel economy and CO2 emissions in the CD-segment

Mazda’s new-generation flagship Mazda6 is on sale in the Ireland in Saloon and Tourer guise from 25 January 2013 following its unveiling at the Paris Motor Show on 27 September 2012. Prices for petrol models will start at €28,745 RRP for the 2.0-litre 145ps Saloon Executive, rising to €30,095 for the 2.0-litre 145ps Tourer Sport. Diesel variants start at €31,795 for the 2.2-litre 150ps Saloon Sport through to €38,895 for the 2.2-litre 175ps Saloon Sport SE Auto.

Built to feel like an extension of its driver, the all-new Mazda6 brings together the most advanced iteration yet of Mazda’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom driving and electrifying ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ styling. The combination of highly efficient SKYACTIV technology and the striking KODO design will ensure the Mazda6 is perfectly equipped to tackle the competitive CD-segment.

The all-new Mazda6 – now in its third generation – is the first mass-production Mazda model to be equipped with i-ELOOP, the Japanese company’s unique brake energy regeneration system. Fitted as standard to the majority of Mazda6 models sold in Ireland, this innovative system can boost economy by up to 10 percent, depending on driving conditions. It’s the most recent ingredient of Mazda’s building-block strategy for uncompromisingly efficient and fun-to-drive vehicles.

i-ELOOP joins the innovative ‘i-stop’ idle-stop system and SKYACTIV powertrains, chassis and body – first introduced on the Mazda CX-5 – and positions the all-new Mazda6 as the benchmark for fuel economy and CO2.. With combined fuel economy as high as 67.3mpg and emissions as low as 108g/km – without any sacrifice in performance – based on CO2, the Mazda6 is the new class leader.

Mazda’s range of high-efficiency SKYACTIV powertrains includes two petrol engines and two diesels paired to six-speed automatic or manual transmissions. A SKYACTIV-G petrol engine is a 2.0-litre 145ps producing 210Nm at 4,000rpm. SKYACTIV-D diesel engines include the 2.2-litre 150ps producing 380Nm at 1,800rpm to 2,600rpm and the 2.2-litre 175ps producing 420Nm at 2,000rpm.

Together with SKYACTIV powertrains, the SKYACTIV-Chassis and SKYACTIV-Body make the all-new Mazda6 an engaging and rewarding drive, delivering refined, linear handling, segment-leading safety and a uniquely efficient and lightweight design.

Chassis and body structures are stiffer, benefiting from greater proportions of high and ultra-high tensile steels. The steering and suspension combine low-speed agility with high-speed stability and responsiveness to driver input – at a level of precision unparalleled in the CD-segment. In addition to being quieter and more aerodynamic, the all-new Mazda6 will also be a segment leader in terms of safety.

The SKYACTIV-Body offers class-leading impact protection thanks to highly rigid impact-absorbing structures and innovative load paths to disperse energy away from the cabin. To help the driver avoid accidents, the all-new Mazda6 features an impressive array of advanced active safety technologies such as Smart City Brake Support (SCSB). Even when a collision is unavoidable, passive safety technologies work to diminish its severity for occupants and pedestrians – and even the vehicle itself.

In the interior, form meets function in a highly ergonomic cockpit design to make driving as enjoyably and engaging as possible. Everything is exactly where it should be: even the repositioned A-pillars, moved rearwards by a full 100mm relative to the previous model, contribute to a stress-free experience by widening the driver’s field of view.

Passengers will appreciate the relaxing atmosphere in the cabin, which features segment-leading passenger space on the Saloon models, accompanied by the latest infotainment technology, including an 11-speaker BOSE® surround sound audio system, available on Sport SE models.

Specially developed to highlight the features of the Mazda6’s KODO design, Soul Red Metallic is an all-new body colour, which uses a unique process to deliver unprecedented levels of depth, shading and vividness that accentuate all-new Mazda6’s stunning form and character lines. Blue Reflex Mica, Meteor Grey Mica and Jet Black Mica also debut on the all-new Mazda6.

Mazda CX-5 wins ‘Best Buy’ SUV award from What Car?

SKYACTIV-equipped Mazda CX-5 wins What Car? ‘Best Buy’ SUV award

€32,895 Mazda CX-5 described as “an unbeatable buy at (much) less than €33,000”

Mazda CX-5 compact SUV records CO2 emissions from 119g/km and up to 4.6L/100km (61.4mpg

Experts at Britain’s biggest and best selling car buyer’s guide What Car?, have named the Mazda CX-5 compact SUV as Britain’s ‘Best Buy’ SUV in the under €33,000 category.

Explaining its selection of the €32,895, 2.2-litre, 150ps diesel Mazda CX-5 as a class winner, the latest ‘Awards 2013’ edition of the influential monthly publication states: “This really is one of the finest diesels you can buy. It has walloping low-down torque, yet is supremely flexible and happy to rev.

Moving on to assess the overall qualities of the Mazda CX-5 the magazine writes: “There’s bags of room for four tall adults, the boot is huge and the rear seats fold down easily. With low running costs, headline-grabbing figures, including remarkable CO2 emissions of just 119g/km and you end up with an unbeatable buy.”

The Mazda CX-5 was the first Mazda to feature the company’s innovative fuel-saving SKYACTIV technologies in powertrains, transmissions, chassis and body. Completely rethinking traditional engineering to create SKYACTIV enabled Mazda to defy convention and produce a remarkably efficient new SUV which retains the fun-to-drive qualities that are an essential ingredient of the Japanese brand.

The Mazda CX-5 model range features an 12-strong line-up with prices starting from €28,895 and rising to €39,295 (RRP). Customers are offered a choice of three engines (165ps petrol and 150ps or 175ps diesel), manual and automatic transmissions, 2-wheel drive or All-wheel drive (AWD) and two equipment levels – Sport and Sport SE.

Generously specified, Mazda CX-5 Sport models come with 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, dual zone climate control air-conditioning, Smart City Brake Support and privacy glass, plus front and rear parking sensors. Moving up the Mazda CX-5 range, Sport SE grade models are equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights with Adaptive Front Lighting System, full leather trim, heated front seats, powered driver’s seat and a reversing camera.

The latest accolade for the Mazda CX-5 follows three earlier awards for the CX-5 compact SUV equipped with SKYACTIV technology – the 2012 What Car? Green SUV Award, the 2012 SCOTY (Scottish Car of the Year) Safety Award, and most recently, together with all-new Mazda6, the 2013 What Car? Ultra-low-carbon Award.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV engines, transmissions, chassis and body technologies will be progressively introduced across the Mazda range as other new models reach the marketplace.

Currently, SKYACTIV technology is available on Mazda CX-5 SUV models, and will be available on the all-new Mazda6 (on sale from 25 January).

For full details of the latest promotions and finance offers visit http://www.mazda.ie/offers/offers-overview/

Mazda SKYACTIV technology wins What Car? Ultra-low-carbon Award

Mazda SKYACTIV technology praised for its ‘totally fresh approach’ to fuel efficiency

SKYACTIV-equipped all-new Mazda6 delivers class leading CO2 emissions from as low as 108g/km

Mazda CX-5 compact SUV records CO2 emissions from 119g/km, thanks to SKYACTIV technology

Mazda’s ability to defy convention and manufacture uniquely efficient cars was given another glowing endorsement this week by experts at Britain’s biggest and best selling car buyer’s guide. During the annual What Car? Awards held in London last night, judges from the influential monthly publication selected Mazda’s fuel-saving SKYACTIV technologies as winner of the Ultra-low-carbon Award.

Praising Mazda’s innovative technology at the awards ceremony, What Car? editor-in-chief Chas Hallett said: “Mazda wins this year’s Ultra-low-carbon Award because it has taken a totally fresh approach to improving fuel efficiency and lowering emissions. We named its first vehicle with SKYACTIV technology, the Mazda CX-5, our Green SUV of the Year 2012. Mazda has shown it can deliver real improvements without resorting to more expensive hybrid or electric technology.”

Describing this year’s prize winners in detail, the ‘Awards 2013’ edition of What Car? states: “Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology incorporates some of the world’s most advanced petrol and diesel engines to lower emissions and improve fuel consumption without compromising the driving dynamics. The latest version of the Mazda6 delivers CO2 emissions from as low as 108g/km – a remarkable figure which shows how a radical rethink can deliver real gains.”

The latest award for Mazda SKYACTIV technology follows two accolades for the Mazda CX-5 compact SUV equipped with this technology – the 2012 What Car? Green SUV Award and the 2012 SCOTY (Scottish Car of the Year) Safety Award.

"Mazda is proud to have a high-profile publication, such as What Car?, acknowledge that our truly innovative fuel-saving SKYACTIV technology has enabled us to produce two remarkably efficient new vehicles while retaining the fun-to-drive qualities which are typical core features of our brand,” comments Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda UK.

“The introduction of our unique i-ELOOP regenerative braking system on the all-new Mazda6 is the latest additional ingredient to Mazda’s long-term building block strategy for creating uncompromisingly efficient vehicles which also deliver responsive performance.

“Both the Mazda CX-5 and all-new Mazda6 offer customers a class-leading combination of a rewarding drive, outstanding fuel economy, solid environmental credentials, high specification, attractive pricing, unusually low running costs and excellent residuals – making them remarkably compelling ownership propositions,” adds Thomson.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV engines, transmissions, chassis and body technologies are currently available on the Mazda CX-5 SUV models, will be available on the all-new Mazda6 currently on sale – with the addition of the unique i-ELOOP regenerative braking system, and will also be progressively introduced across the Mazda range as other new models come to the marketplace in years to come.

How i-ELOOP defies convention to give cleaner motoring

Lightweight capacitor saves engine power and boosts fuel economy

Launches with all-new Mazda6

Standard fit across the majority of all-new Mazda6 models

The best way to harvest what is essentially ‘free’ engine power under braking or when running on a trailing throttle for example, has challenged engineers for decades.

The most common solution is brake energy regeneration: capturing kinetic energy (the energy generated by a vehicle when it moves) that would otherwise be lost when slowing down. This energy is used to recharge batteries in electric and hybrid cars, for example, or to power the on-board electrical network and save engine power and therefore save fuel.

Such systems have been in use for some years – Formula One racing cars started to use them in 2009 – but Mazda’s system is unique. i-ELOOP (short for “intelligent Energy Loop”) is the world’s first passenger car system to use a capacitor to store the electricity.

The all-new Mazda6 is the first of Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology models to be available with i-ELOOP.

A typical vehicle deceleration phase lasts only about 10 seconds. Realising that the effectiveness of regenerative braking systems to date has been limited by the charging and storage drawbacks of conventional lead-acid starter batteries, Mazda engineers adopted an electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC), which recharges fully in only a few seconds. An efficient 12V-25V variable voltage alternator generates the electricity and charges the EDLC; a DC/DC converter then steps down the voltage to power electrical components such as the climate control air-conditioning and audio systems, with any surplus going to the starter battery.

A full capacitor charge is enough to run the vehicle’s electrical systems for a minute or so. This makes i-ELOOP the perfect companion for i-stop – the latter launched as standard on the Mazda CX-5 and the all-new Mazda6 – as there is no need to revert to battery power even when Mazda’s idle-stop system has shut the car off. During stop-and-go city driving, charging often resumes before the capacitor is fully discharged. i-ELOOP can therefore produce most if not all of a vehicle’s electricity needs, whereas normally some of the engine’s output is required just to drive the alternator. By freeing up this engine capacity, i-ELOOP increases fuel economy under everyday driving conditions.

To see i-ELOOP in action view the following short film here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7UB6WPTvoQ

Mazda CX-5 Wins Car of the Year in Japan

Leverkusen, 30 November 2012. Mazda Motor Corporation’s compact crossover SUV, the CX-5 has been named the 2012-2013 Car of the Year Japan. The award was announced by the Japan Car of the Year committee on November 29, 2012.

The CX-5 was the first model to adopt the full range of Mazda’s SKYACTIV* technologies including new engines, transmissions, body and chassis. It offers a predictable and refined driving experience together with outstanding environmental and safety performance. It is also the first model to fully embody Mazda’s new design theme, KODO – Soul of Motion. With finely-honed vitality and dynamism, its styling is reminiscent of a cheetah about to pounce on its prey.

The CX-5 equipped with Mazda’s new-generation SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine boasts powerful driving comparable to a 4.0-litre V8 gasoline engine vehicle thanks to 420 Nm of maximum torque. At the same time, it achieves an SUV class-topping fuel consumption of 4.6 l/100 km with only 119 g/km of CO2 emissions.

In approximately nine months since sales of the CX-5 started in February, Mazda has received 37,000 orders in Japan, more than 33,000 in Europe and over 128,000 globally, and sales continue to be strong.

All passenger vehicles with an expected annual sales volume of over 500 units, announced or launched in Japan between November 1, 2011 and October 31, 2012 are eligible for this year’s Japan Car of the Year award. The last Mazda to be named the Car of the Year Japan was the MX-5 in 2005. The CX-5 is the fourth Mazda to win the award.

Executive Officer Kiyoshi Fujiwara commented, "We are thrilled to have the CX-5 receive such a coveted award and appreciate the warm support and encouragement of our fans. Spurred on by this honour, we will continue to dedicate ourselves to the task of crafting cars that only Mazda can, in order to continue winning the support of our fans and customers into the future.”

* An umbrella term for Mazda’s new-generation technologies, including SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine, SKYACTIV-D diesel engine, SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission, SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission, high-performance lightweight SKYACTIV-CHASSIS and lightweight, highly rigid SKYACTIV-BODY

New look upgraded MX-5 on sale from 1 December

Fresh face and TomTom® satellite navigation for upgraded Mazda MX-5 sportscar

Roadster Coupe model priced at €32,995 (RRP)

Voted ‘Best Roadster’ for six years in the Auto Express New Car Awards

Mazda has revised the line-up for its iconic MX-5 sportscar by introducing upgraded models with a fresh face, new pedestrian-friendly bonnet, satellite navigation system, side airbags, climate control air-conditioning and an even more rewarding driving experience.

As well as giving upgraded Mazda MX-5 a fresh appearance, the new front-end design simultaneously improves pedestrian safety. Keeping ahead of tougher EU regulations, the MX-5 is the first Mazda to be equipped with the company’s newly-developed active bonnet system. If a collision with a pedestrian is detected, the trailing edge of the bonnet instantly ‘pops-up’ to increase the crumple zone between the bonnet and engine, reducing the severity of pedestrian injuries.

Every upgraded Mazda MX-5 continues to offer the Japanese marque’s unique ‘Jinba Ittai’ handling finesse with a rear-wheel drive chassis that delivers perfectly balanced handling and pure driving exhilaration. Now, the six manual transmission models feature a modified throttle to improve responsiveness and give more linear, nimble acceleration, especially when manoeuvring out of corners. At the same time, Mazda engineers optimised the vacuum brake booster to improve brake return control and thus front-rear load distribution, particularly when braking into bends.

The upgraded Mazda MX-5 benefits from enhanced equipment with climate control air-conditioning and glossy dark grey dashboard panel and steering wheel inserts on every model. The Mazda MX-5 Sport Tech and an alloy pedal set. The Sport Tech Nav model also features a TomTom satellite-navigation system with a fully integrated 5.8-inch touch screen monitor, 4GB SD card based map (45 countries), Live Services, iPod and Bluetooth® connectivity, and complete multi-media functionality.

The upgraded Mazda MX-5 range also benefits from a refreshed palette of colours and new to the Mazda MX-5 range, Sparkling Black Mica, Dolphin Grey Mica and Crystal White Pearlescent. Also available is the popular True Red Solid, Aluminium Silver Metallic, Copper Red Mica and Stormy Blue Mica.

Mazda MX-5 Sport Tech is powered by the 160ps 2.0i MZR with a smooth-shifting six-speed manual transmission

For full details of the latest promotions and finance offers visit http://www.mazda.ie/offers/offers-overview/

Mazda6 and Takeri – Separated at Birth

New Mazda6 proportions and stance are almost exactly the same as Takeri

‘KODO - Soul of Motion’ design ethos takes concept cars and drives them off the show stand and onto the road

Dramatic proportions, muscular stance and tactile detailing – new Mazda6

With the launch of the all-new Mazda6 there is a trend emerging from Mazda, its production cars closely resemble its concepts.

When the wraps came off the all-new Mazda6 at last month’s Moscow Motorshow, it’s design and style was incredibly well received, and much of this overwhelmingly positive response was due to its striking similarity to the Takeri design concept believes Peter Birtwhistle, Mazda’s European Chief Designer.

“With our ‘KODO - Soul of Motion’ design ethos, we are taking our concept cars and driving them off the show stand and onto the road,” says Birtwhistle. “You only have to look at our recent design studies to realise just how closely our production models mimics our concept cars.”

“Much like the CX-5 mirrored the proportions, stance and detailing of the Minagi concept car we unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motorshow, so the Takeri was the unmistakable inspiration for the new Mazda6,” explains Birtwhistle. “If you view the two cars next to each other it is easy to see just how strongly one resembles the other.”

Of course, Mazda has a great history of creating some pretty wild concept vehicles that stretch the creativity of our designers and demonstrate our design power to the limit. But it’s also strategically important to show something closer to production as we roll out our KODO design message. Hence Minagi and Takeri.

These ‘teaser’ concepts are generally constructed well after the final production design has been signed off and are exceptionally valuable in gauging the response from both the media and the general public.

“While some manufacturers tend to heavily camouflage their teaser show cars – creating a coupé concept when in reality the production version will be a five-door hatch – we took the decision with Takeri to base it as closely as possible on the final production car,” continues Birtwhistle.

While Takeri is fractionally lower, longer and wider than the new Mazda6, its proportions and stance are almost exactly the same. So, like the Minagi and the CX-5 before it, the Takeri was incredibly close to new Mazda6.

“To use Takeri and its KODO design language to accurately portray how the Mazda6 would look was quite a radical decision by the design team,” admits Birtwhistle. “Some commentators believe that the new Mazda6 is not close enough to the Takeri - in hindsight, I believe it’s the other way round.”

Birtwhistle muses over the idea of the Takeri being too close in its design to the Mazda6. “Possibly, yes, but if we had taken the route of our competitors and created a coupé or convertible, we certainly wouldn’t have had anything to measure it by and learn from. When it comes to concept cars and design studies, you don't have to stray too far the production version to run the risk of seriously diluting the public’s expectation when production car is finally revealed.”

Place Takeri and the new Mazda6 alongside each other and Birtwhistle believes that the most observers would be hard pressed to tell one from the other. “You have to look twice – and when you see the new Mazda6 on the road outside in its natural environment street scene, the similarity is even more pronounced with its dramatic proportions, muscular stance and tactile detailing.”

A key factor behind the svelte lines of the new Mazda6 is the lower angled positioning of its SKYACTIV engines, an arrangement that allows the designers to dramatically rake back the car’s windscreen to create a cabin position very similar to those of a rear-wheel drive car.

“This car sits beautifully on the road,” says Birtwhistle. “It’s low, curvaceous and cleanly detailed. It looks just like a concept car let loose on the motorway. Which is really what it is.”

World premiere of all-new Mazda6 Wagon at 2012 Paris Motor Show

With our latest exciting release we’re taking wagon-car driving to a whole new level of style and pleasure.

The all-new Mazda6 Wagon will premiere at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, starting on September 27. And exhibiting alongside it will be our all-new Mazda6 Sedan, which we unveiled at the Moscow Motor Show on 29 August. Both cars will go on sale in Europe later in 2012.

The two models on show in Paris will feature our new SKYACTIV-D 2.2 litre diesel engine, which is available with 150 PS or 175 PS of power. Both engines comply with Euro6, the most stringent European emissions standards.

For drivers preferring a petrol engine, the Mazda6 Wagon and Mazda6 Sedan will also be available with our SKYACTIV-G 2.0 litre (145 PS or 165 PS) and SKYACTIV-G 2.5 litre (192 PS) direct-injection petrol engines.

As our new flagship model, the Mazda6 is the second in our new generation of cars to incorporate the full array of our SKYACTIV technologies and ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design theme. It’s this blend of design, craftsmanship and technology that gives the new Mazda6 such an outstanding environmental and safety performance. For example, it includes our pioneering i-ELOOP technology, which powers the car’s electrics using energy generated when decelerating. And it also offers among the most advanced safety technologies on the road.

Of course, being Mazda, we’ve made sure these functional considerations take nothing away from the all-important driving experience. We’re confident you’ll be thrilled with the wonderful driving dynamics of both cars.

Mazda CX-5 wins European AUTO BILD

• Mazda CX-5 is most beautiful car in the “SUV, Van and All-Wheel” category
• Expressive exterior impressed readers in 15 European countries
• First Mazda production model with new KODO design language

Leverkusen, 17 August 2012. Who’s the fairest in Europe? Readers of the AUTO BILD Group have chosen – winner and most attractive vehicle in the “SUV, Van and All-Wheel” category is the Mazda CX-5. About 200,000 readers from all AUTO BILD subsidiary publications in 15 countries voted on which European car has the best design in various categories. With 17.8 percent of the votes, the Mazda CX-5 sprinted away from its SUV and all-wheel competitors – Audi A6 Allroad (second place with 10.8 percent) and the Audi Q3 (third place with 9.9 percent) – to take home the European design trophy in its segment.

Readers from the Czech Republic, Turkey, Georgia and Spain voted the Mazda CX-5 as their most attractive new car in its category. German readers voted the new compact third behind the Mercedes ML and the Audi A6 Allroad. But to ensure the victory, votes from all European countries were tallied. In 2009, the Mazda3 also won the AUTO BILD European Design Award in the “Small and Compact Car” category – and it won even before official market launch in Germany.

Mazda CX-5 Design – Form and Function in perfect Harmony
As the first production model with the new design language “KODO – Soul of Motion”, Mazda CX-5 combines motion with the beauty and power of nature. The new Mazda CX-5 has a striking front face with prominent wheel wells. The vehicle seems to crouch forward in a way reminiscent of a sprinter in the starting blocks just before the gun goes off. Its cabin is placed towards the back of the vehicle, which makes the car look like a predator about to jump on its prey. The CX-5 cuts an elegant-looking figure with an overall design aesthetic that sets it apart from other SUVs.

Symbolic for the new design language is the new front grille with a typical Mazda five-point shape that is deep and powerfully articulated, and reaches all the way to the front headlamps. The trapezoidal lower grille underscores its solid look, while the prominent rear wheel wells and the sharp-edged back end lend the Mazda CX-5 a strong yet elegant character. And the form of the rear lamps, which are similar to the front lamps, gives the back of the car a striking appearance. A sporty accent is set by the roof spoiler that also improves aerodynamics.

Mazda's ability to defy convention and manufacture uniquely appealing cars was given another glowing endorsement by experts at the UK's best-selling weekly automotive magazine. Judges for the annual Auto Express New Car Awards held at The Grand Connaught Rooms in London selected the all-new Mazda CX-5 compact SUV as 'Best Crossover' for 2012 yesterday (Tuesday 26th June).

Praising the Mazda CX-5, Auto Express editor-in-chief, Steve Fowler, commented: "The CX-5 has set a new benchmark for crossovers combining space, quality and style with a great drive and incredible efficiency. It's rare that you can get all that in one affordable package that won't cost the earth to run - this is a car that can make you smile and keep you smiling."

Assessing the CX-5 and its class rivals, the magazine's judging panel scrutinised each car's driving attributes, interior quality, running costs and purchase price. The competitors beaten by the all-new Mazda CX-5 included the Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai, Peugeot 3008, Skoda Yeti and VW Tiguan.

"Mazda is proud to have a high profile publication, such as Auto Express, confirm that our latest product, with its truly innovative SKYACTIV technology, is the very best vehicle in its class," comments Peter Allibon, Sales Director, Mazda UK.

"Thanks to its fuel economy, solid environmental credentials, typically Mazda fun-to-drive performance, high specification, attractive pricing, unusually low running costs for its class and excellent residuals, the Mazda CX-5 will offer customers a rewarding drive, excellent value and a remarkably compelling ownership proposition. This car is going to make a lot of customer's shortlists, as it possesses all the key attributes today's consumer is looking for," adds Allibon.

The 12-strong line-up of Mazda CX-5 model is priced from €28,895 to €39,295 (RRP). Customers have a choice of one petrol and one diesel engine (with two power outputs), three trim levels (Executive, Sport and Sport SE), six-speed manual and automatic transmissions and 2-wheel drive (2WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) - depending on model.

All the SKYACTIV powertrains available with CX-5 are fitted with Mazda's advanced i-stop fuel-saving system. The SKYACTIV-G petrol engine generates 165ps / 210Nm of torque. The SKYACTIV-D turbo diesel engine (expected to account for 85 percent of sales), is available in two versions producing 150ps / 380Nm or 175ps / 420Nm. Combined mpg ranges from 4.6L/100km (61.4 mpg) to 5.3L/100km (47.1 mpg), with CO2 emissions from 119 to 139g/km.

The six-speed manual and six-speed automatic are all-new transmissions, while AWD models feature variable torque distribution and ultra-precise slip detection, giving a front/rear torque split ranging from 100/0 to 50/50 percent.

On the inside, the Mazda CX-5 has generous front and rear legroom (thanks in part to its class-best 2,700mm wheelbase), and a cavernous boot (463 litres) - one of the segment's largest - plus a high quality feel, superior functionality and low noise levels for an enjoyable ride. Easy-to-use Karakuri features, include the three-piece 40/20/40 split folding rear seats with release levers in the cargo area and an advanced Karakuri tonneau cover that opens and closes with the tailgate.

Ahead of the Euro NCAP demand for the fitting of such systems, every Mazda CX-5 is equipped with 'Smart City Brake Support' (SCBS), which helps a driver to avoid a low speed (up to 19mph) frontal collision by activating the brakes and reducing the engine output, if the system detects a frontal collision is likely.

For full details of the latest promotions and finance offers visit http://www.mazda.ie/offers/offers-overview/

Mazda Announces SKYACTIV-D CLEAN DIESEL Engine for 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans

Le Mans, France, 16 June 2012. Mazda Motorsports today announced that it will sell racing versions of its new SKYACTIV-D CLEAN DIESEL engines to teams competing in the Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) class of racing’s greatest endurance challenge – the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Le Mans engine program will make its debut at the 2013 running of the race. Mazda was the first – and to this day, remains the only – Asian manufacturer to score an overall win at the race, in 1991.

“This reopens our love affair with Le Mans,” said Jay Amestoy, Vice President of Mazda Motorsports, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “In 1991 we made history, winning with rotary technology. Now we’re looking to return to the winner’s circle with what we believe will be the most advanced and cleanest production-based powerplant the sport has ever seen. We’ll do it in current Mazda style, with engines being available for sale to European and U.S. customers competing in the LMP2 class for both the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).”

The engines are being developed jointly by Mazda Motor Corporation, Mazda North American Operations and SpeedSource Race Engineering. Dyno testing has already begun and on-track testing begins in late 2012.

The engines will be stock-block Mazda SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter diesel four-cylinder, dual-stage turbocharged powerplants. According to John Doonan, MNAO’s Director of Mazda Motorsports, “will deliver outstanding performance and fuel economy coupled with the kind of quality, durability and reliability needed to produce great street cars and win endurance races.”

Mr. Masahiro Moro, Executive Officer in charge of global sales and marketing of Mazda Motor Corporation, made the following comment: "Mazda has fostered the culture of 'never stop challenging.' And it was this spirit that drove us through 18 consecutive years of racing at Le Mans, until we finally triumphed in 1991. In fact, it is this same spirit that laid the foundation for the portfolio of SKYACTIV Technologies. This was realized thanks to a number of technological breakthroughs. I am pleased that we will be supporting our private customers who are taking up the Le Mans challenge by supplying race engines as a customer-program based on our SKYACTIV-D CLEAN DIESEL."

Dempsey Racing planning to be first SKYACTIV-D customer
Planning and preparations continue for Dempsey Racing to become the first LMP2 customer for the Mazda SKYACTIV-D racing powerplant. Dempsey Racing is co-owned by racer/actor Patrick Dempsey.

Dempsey Racing has been racing Mazda RX-8s in the GRAND-AM GT class since 2007 with their highlight being a podium finish at the 2011 Rolex 24 at Daytona. The team has steadily improved their on-track performance since their arrival in the series, and was a key contributor to Mazda winning the 2010 GRAND-AM GT Manufacturers Championship. With support from several partners such as VISITFLORIDA.com, Dempsey Racing expanded their operation this year to include a team running in the American Le Mans Series, and is competing in both the Prototype Challenge (LMPC) and Prototype 2 (LMP2) classes as they prepare for their Le Mans effort. In fact both team owner Dempsey and co-driver Joe Foster are currently testing their LMP2 car in Virginia as the rest of the sports car world focuses on the 80th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend.

Patrick Dempsey and his business partner/co-driver Joe Foster have both competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as drivers in the GT category, and are eager to return in 2013, this time in the LMP2 class and with Mazda SKYACTIV-D clean diesel-power.

Patrick Dempsey comments “Our long-term partnership with Mazda has been fantastic, and we look forward to mutual success as we prepare for 2013. We are focused on that preparation which is why we are currently testing our LMP2 car here in the US in preparation for the next ALMS event. Our team and partners are excited to be associated with SKYACTIV-D technology and the cutting-edge green technology it represents."

Mazda CX-5 earns five stars from Euro NCAP

LEVERKUSEN, Germany — Mazda’s all-new CX-5 is officially one of the safest cars in the world after receiving five-stars from Euro NCAP¹, the highest possible safety rating.

The CX-5, a compact crossover SUV launched in Europe in February, achieved top marks in all four safety categories². Its grades for adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, and safety assist systems (94%, 87% and 86%, respectively) were well above the 80%, 75% and 60% thresholds in these categories required to collect five stars overall. Indeed, the CX-5 attained the maximum rating despite being subject to higher standards introduced by Euro NCAP in 2012 for pedestrian protection, where vehicles now need a score of at least 60%

Following the Mazda6 and Mazda3, the CX-5 is the third Mazda to earn five stars from Euro NCAP since the agency introduced its new rating system in 2009. The scores in each category are determined based on several crash tests, including a 64km/h frontal impact, 50km/h vehicle-to-vehicle side impact, 29km/h pole side impact and 40km/h simulated pedestrian impact. Euro NCAP also evaluates the electronic stability control (ESC) system3, among other things.

The first of a new generation of Mazdas, the CX-5 is also the first model equipped with the innovative new SKYACTIV-Body. With the aim of developing the ideal car body, Mazda’s engineers went back to the drawing board, rethinking the fundamental principles of structure, materials and manufacturing methods. As a result, high-tensile steels comprise 61% of the body. In fact, the bumper beams inside the front and rear bumpers are made from 1,800 MPa ultra high-tensile steel—the strongest ever used in an automobile. Mazda has thus come up with a body that not only delivers superior crash safety, but is also extremely lightweight. Mazda plans to use the SKYACTIV-Body in all its new-generation products.

1) European New Car Assessment Programme, an independent agency awarding automotive safety ratings since 1997.
2) The four categories are weighted as follows to determine the overall score: 50% adult occupant protection, 20% child occupant protection, 20% pedestrian protection and 10% safety assist.
3) Mazda calls its ESC system Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).

Mazda and Fiat announce co-operation program

Mazda Motor Corporation (Mazda) and Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A. (Fiat) have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development and manufacturing of a new roadster for the Mazda and Alfa Romeo marques based on Mazda's next-generation MX-5 rear-wheel-drive architecture.

The study calls for both Mazda and Fiat to develop two differentiated, distinctly styled, iconic and brand-specific light weight, roadsters featuring rear-wheel drive. The Mazda and Alfa Romeo variants will each be powered by specific proprietary engines unique to each brand.

The project assumption is that both vehicles will be manufactured at Mazda's Hiroshima, Japan, plant with production for Alfa Romeo envisaged starting in 2015.

"Establishing technology and product development alliances is one of Mazda's corporate objectives and this announcement with Fiat is an important first step in that direction. It is especially exciting to be collaborating with such a prestigious marque as Alfa Romeo on a new roadster based on the next-generation MX-5, which is such an iconic vehicle for Mazda and recognised as the best-selling roadster of all time." said Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda's Representative Director and Chairman of the Board, President and CEO.

"This agreement clearly demonstrates our commitment to Alfa Romeo and the determination to grow it into a truly global brand. By partnering with Mazda, we will be co-operating with the recognised leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster in the Alfa Romeo tradition. We are appreciative of this collaboration with Mazda and look forward to maintaining a fruitful and continuous relationship." said Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne.

The Final Agreement is expected to be signed in the second-half of 2012.

Mazda and Fiat have also agreed to discuss further opportunities for co-operation in Europe.

Mazda CX-5 earns five stars from Euro NCAP

Mazda's all-new CX-5 is officially one of the safest cars in the world after receiving five-stars - the highest possible safety rating - from Euro NCAP.

The CX-5, a compact crossover SUV that went on sale in the UK earlier this month, achieved top marks in all four safety categories*. Its grades for adult occupant protection, child occupant protection and safety assist systems (94 percent, 87 percent and 86 percent respectively) were well above the 80 percent, 75 percent and 60 percent thresholds required in each category to collect the maximum five stars. Mazda's latest model attained the maximum safety rating despite being subject to the higher pedestrian protection standards introduced by Euro NCAP in 2012, an area in which vehicles must now score at least 60 percent.

After the Mazda3 and Mazda6, the CX-5 is the third Mazda model to earn five stars from Euro NCAP since the introduction of its new rating system in 2009. The scores in each category are determined based on several crash tests, including a 64km/h (40mph) frontal collision, 50km/h (31mph) vehicle-to-vehicle side impact, 29km/h (18mph) pole side impact, and 40km/h (25mph) simulated pedestrian impact. Among other active and passive safety measures, Euro NCAP also evaluated the CX-5's Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, Mazda's equivalent to electronic stability control (ESC).

The first of a new generation of Mazda models, the CX-5 is the first equipped with the innovative new SKYACTIV body. With the aim of developing the ideal car body, Mazda's engineers went back to the drawing board, rethinking the fundamental principles of structure, materials and manufacturing methods.

As a result, high-tensile steels comprise 61 percent of the body. In particular, beams inside the front and rear bumpers are made from 1,800 MPa ultra high-tensile steel - the strongest ever used in a production car. The Mazda CX-5 therefore not only delivers superior crash safety, but is also extremely lightweight. Mazda plans to use the SKYACTIV body in all of its new-generation products.

Mazda raises safety levels with all-new Mazda CX-5 technology

Mazda's all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV, arriving this spring, comes equipped with a range of breakthrough technologies. Designed to appeal to the corporate sector, the technology includes the debut of safety features such as Smart City Brake Support, state-of-the-art passive safety structures, such as the lightweight yet highly-rigid SKYACTIV-Body and various impact-absorbing structural innovations.

The CX-5 is the first Mazda as well as the first compact SUV with Mazda's new advanced safety technology called 'Smart City Brake Support' (SCBS), which helps a driver to avoid or minimise the impact of a frontal collision when driving at low speeds - under 30 km/h - in the city or in slow moving traffic.

The technology, which is standard across the Mazda CX-5 range, uses a laser sensor mounted at the top of the windscreen to detect a vehicle or obstacle in front of the CX-5, when driving at speeds between 5km/h and 30km/h. If the driver fails to slow his/her vehicle appropriately, or to take avoiding action, SCBS automatically activates the brakes and reduces the engine output at the same time.

In this way, SCBS helps to avoid collisions or mitigate the damage from rear-end collisions at low speeds, which are among the most common accidents, and thus helps keep fleet repair costs, insurance premiums and vehicle downtime in check.

While SCBS adds to the cost-saving benefits of the Mazda CX-5, Mazda's SKYACTIV technology, debuting on this first sixth generation model, promises major total cost of ownership savings for fleet operators and significant financial benefits for company car drivers over rival models due to major fuel savings and low emissions.

Not only do all Mazda CX-5 models come with an accident avoidance system, but Mazda has developed a straighter, more continuous frame and an extremely efficient multi-load path structure for the SKYACTIV-Body of the vehicle in the event of a crash.

The structure efficiently absorbs the load at the time of a crash by dispersing it in multiple directions thus greatly improving the overall safety of occupants.

Other standard safety equipment highlights on the Mazda CX-5 include front and rear parking sensors, Dynamic Stability Control with Traction Control System, Hill Hold Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, dual front and front side airbags and front and rear curtain airbags; driver, passenger and rear-seat audible seatbelt reminder warning and a reversing camera.

On-the-road prices for the Mazda CX-5 start at €28,895. There is a choice of three equipment levels - Executive, Sport and Sport SE with manual and automatic options - a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre 165ps 2-wheel drive (2WD) petrol engine and SKYACYTIV-D 2.2-litre 150ps and 2.2-litre 175ps diesel engines with two and all-wheel drive choices.

Mazda regenerative braking system improves fuel economy by 10 per cent

Mazda Motor Corporation has developed a regenerative braking system for passenger cars capable of improving fuel economy by approximately 10 per cent. The new i-ELOOP system, the first of its kind in the world to use a capacitor, will begin to appear in Mazda vehicles from 2012.

i-ELOOP efficiently converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into electricity as it decelerates, using the electricity to power the climate control, audio system and numerous other electrical components. The unique capacitor technology in i-ELOOP can store large volumes of electricity and, unlike batteries, can be charged and discharged rapidly and is resistant to deterioration through prolonged use.

The name i-ELOOP is an adaptation of 'Intelligent Energy Loop' and represents Mazda's intention to efficiently recycle energy in an intelligent way.

Regenerative braking systems are growing in popularity as a means of saving fuel. They use an electric motor or alternator to generate electricity as the vehicle decelerates, thereby recovering a portion of the vehicle's kinetic energy. Unlike the regenerative braking systems found in hybrid vehicles, Mazda's highly efficient solution avoids the need for a dedicated electric motor and battery.

i-ELOOP features a new variable voltage (12-25V) alternator, a low-resistance Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) and a DC/DC converter. i-ELOOP starts to recover kinetic energy the moment the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal and the vehicle begins to decelerate. The variable voltage alternator generates electricity at up to 25V for maximum efficiency before sending it to the EDLC for storage. The capacitor, which has been specially developed for use in a vehicle, can be fully charged in seconds. The DC/DC converter steps down the electricity from 25V to 12V before it is distributed directly to the vehicle's electrical components.

In stop-start driving conditions, the use of i-ELOOP fuel economy improves by approximately 10 per cent. Working in conjunction with Mazda's unique 'i-stop' idling stop technology, i-ELOOP can extend the period that the engine can be shut off.

Mazda is working to maximise the efficiency of internal combustion engine vehicles with its groundbreaking SKYACTIV Technology. By combining this with i-stop, i-ELOOP and other electric devices that enhance fuel economy by eliminating unnecessary fuel consumption, Mazda is striving to deliver vehicles with excellent environmental performance, as well as a Zoom-Zoom driving experience for all its customers.

At the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda will debut the i-ELOOP system in the TAKERI concept car, a next generation mid-sized saloon that features SKYACTIV Technology and the Japanese company's 'KODO - Soul of Motion' design theme.

Mazda's first vehicle for the UK and European market to have the full range of innovative SKYACTIV technologies will be the Mazda CX-5 compact SUV, set for launch in Spring 2012. This all-new vehicle will offer outstanding reductions in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, combined with the exhilarating driving experience - the Jinba Ittai, or 'oneness' between car and driver previously typified by the MX-5 sportscar - for which Mazda is so well known.

The All-New Mazda CX-5

Mazda believes cars should be fun to drive, and we have a long history of doing that our own way. We mass-produced the rotary engine used in our legendary RX sports cars and built the world's best-selling, lightweight roadster, the Mazda MX-5. With our all-new compact crossover SUV, the Mazda CX-5, we believe we've done it again.

When we began the development of our next-generation SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, we asked ourselves a simple question: "How can we continue to make driving fun, while significantly improving fuel efficiency?" To do this, we began completely from scratch, re-engineering all the major components - the engine, the transmissions, the chassis and the body.

It's a known fact that 70-90% of the energy produced in a conventional engine's combustion process is lost. So we revisited the internal combustion engine, and tried to perfect it, starting with designing a single ideal cylinder. In our petrol engines, we've attained higher compression ratios and in our diesels, lower ratios than ever. Both engines, with either automatic or manual transmissions, have been made lighter and more compact, helping more power get to the wheels of the car.

But we didn't stop there. Versus traditional engineering approaches, we've shaved-off nearly 100 kilos of weight, while increasing strength and rigidity. We've re-engineered our transmissions and benchmarked them against the Mazda MX-5. We've created an ideal body and optimised the chassis for a balanced and responsive ride. When we combine all of these innovative improvements, they deliver a safer, more stable, yet agile driving experience.

Developing SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY to increase both efficiency and driving fun may not be the easiest way to build new cars. But it's the way we build them. And it always will be.

Mazda awarded for its Rear Vehicle Monitoring System

Mazda believes cars should be fun to drive. One of the best ways to ensure that is by first making our cars safe to drive. In recent years, the Mazda3, Mazda6, Mazda2 and Mazda5 have all been awarded 5 stars in Euro NCAP safety tests. And with our new Rear Vehicle Monitoring (RVM) system, we've done it again.

When we began the development of the RVM system, we identified that nearly 5 per cent of all accidents were between vehicles driving in the same direction, and nearly 80 per cent of these were due to a lane change. So we asked ourselves a simple question: "How can we reduce this number?"

Our answer was to mount two radar sensors, one on each side of the rear bumper that constantly measure the distance to, and relative speed of, surrounding vehicles. Activated at speeds above 60 km/h, the RVM system warns a driver with a proximity indicator light mounted on the side-view mirror if a vehicle is in the blind spot area, or is approaching this area. If a driver switches on the turn signal in the direction of an approaching vehicle, the system warns the driver by blinking the proximity light and a beeping warning signal to not change lanes. Mazda's RVM is designed to detect all kinds of vehicles, including motorcycles, and to work in virtually all weather conditions.

Mazda was the first Japanese carmaker to introduce a RVM system in Europe with the Mazda6 in 2008. Since then, the system has been made available on the Mazda3, the Mazda CX-7 and it will be included on the all-new Mazda CX-5 , to be introduced at this year's IAA in Frankfurt. The IAA is also where Mazda will be awarded the coveted "Euro NCAP Advanced" for its safety achievements with the Rear Vehicle Monitoring system on the Mazda3.

The Euro NCAP is an independent crash-test organisation made up of consumer associations, motoring clubs and transport authorities across Europe. They have been awarding automotive safety ratings since 1997.

Making cars fun to drive, by making them safer to drive, may not be the easiest way to build new cars. But it's the way Mazda builds them.

Patrick Dempsey and Johnny Herbert celebrate twentieth anniversary of Mazda’s Le Mans 1991 victory

June 2011 marked the twentieth anniversary of the Mazda 787B's historic triumph in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. By winning Le Mans 1991, the Mazda race car became the first and, to date, the only Japanese auto manufacturer to win the world's most demanding endurance motor race. The legendary Mazda 787B, was powered by a 700 BHP, four-rotor rotary engine. Changes in race regulations meant that 1991 was the last year that rotary engine cars were permitted to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, making the Mazda triumph all the more impressive.

To celebrate Mazda's unique achievement at Le Mans, race organiser Automobile Club de L'Ouest (ACO) invited members of the victorious Le Mans 1991 team to demonstrate and celebrate the winning Mazda 787B on the iconic Circuit de la Sarthe before and after this year's 24-hour race. Patrick Dempsey, the US actor and Mazda RX-8 racer, made a special guest appearance, while English racer and winning co-driver Johnny Herbert finally got on to the podium this year, having missed the post-race celebrations in 1991 due to dehydration.

Seita Kanai, Director and Executive Vice President, Mazda Motor Corporation also attended the two day celebration, and summed up the scale of Mazda's momentous achievement like this: "In 1991, Mazda was very much an underdog team competing against Mercedes and Jaguar. This win was the racing embodiment of our expression - the will to never give up. We are pleased to be able to share this car once again with our many fans and employees around the world."

Mazda2, Mazda3 and MX-5 take top honours on key J.D. Power Surveys in Europe

Mazda customers are some of the most satisfied in Europe. This was underscored again recently by two J.D. Powers Customer Satisfaction Surveys for 2011 in Germany and the United Kingdom. In both these key automotive markets, around 17,000 car owners were asked to rate their car according to driving dynamics, handling, low ownership costs, mechanical reliability and interior quality.

In Germany, Mazda3 not only won the important compact segment, it scored more points than any other of the 117 models surveyed and took home gold as overall winner, ahead of the Mercedes A-Class and the Honda Civic. The dynamic Mazda2 also had reason to celebrate, winning the sub-compact segment ahead of the Dacia Logan and the Mini. With these excellent results, Mazda took third place among the 28 brands on the survey, up from fourth last year.

On the J.D. Power survey in the UK, Mazda MX-5 was a repeat winner in the sports car segment. But it did more than just win its category. Mazda's roadster scored a satisfaction rating that was higher than last year's winning score; and it easily outdistanced the Volkswagen Scirocco, and the luxury sports cars Audi TT, Mercedes-Benz CLK and SLK. This comes just four months after the 900,000th MX-5 rolled of the line in Japan, which will require an update of its entry in the Guinness Book of World Records as the best-selling, two-seat sports car of all time. Extremely reliable and dependable, the majority of these cars are still on the road. A popular race car wherever it is sold, the MX-5 wowed sports car enthusiasts in Europe with its handling at the MX-5 Ice Race held in Sweden earlier this year. A truly cult vehicle, it has fans, clubs and dedicated websites with fanatical enthusiasts on every continent.

Mazda SKYACTIV Research wins another JSAE Award

Mazda continues to win awards for developing fuel-saving, environmentally-friendly technologies for its customers. Two Mazda engineers were presented with the Outstanding Technical Paper award at the 61st annual Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE) presentation. Takashi Youso and Masahisa Yamakawa, both from Mazda's Powertrain Development Division, were honoured for their research paper entitled A Study on the Relationship between Fuel Characteristics and Auto-ignition in Gasoline HCCI Engines.

Mazda has over 90 years of ground-breaking engineering expertise, and this year's honour brings to 11 the JASE awards Mazda has won just since 2006. Last year, for instance, Mazda took home three awards for research that will be used in Mazda's next-generation SKYACTIV vehicles - Mazda's unique start-stop system, i-stop, its single-nano technology catalyst, and for groundbreaking research into the properties of sound insulation material.

This year's winners are honoured for analyzing the effects of different fuel components on ignition performance of an engine using homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI). The paper predicts auto-ignition timing for various grades of petrol from markets around the world, and also demonstrates how knock can be avoided when using a standard spark ignition system as well. The analysis was used to develop Mazda's SKYACTIV-G engine which will employ the highest compression ratio (14.0:1) ever achieved in a petrol engine, while drastically lowering fuel consumption and emissions.

Recent Mazda recipients of JSAE awards

2010

Kenichiro Saruwatari won the Technological Development Award for Mazda's unique combustion restart idling stop system, i-stop
Seiji Miyoshi won the Science Award for Development of platinum group metals (PGM) single-nanocatalyst technology
Naoko Yorozu won an award for his paper Absorption Technique for Road Noise

2009

Motonori Ishibashi won the Outstanding Technical Paper Award for Characterizing indices of driving style and their relevance to car following behavior.
Kouichiro Harada, Hiroshi Yamada, Hiroki Fujita, Kenji Okamoto and Akihide Takami won the Technological Development Award for Development of a high-performance particulate burning catalyst with oxygen ion conductive materials.

2008

Kenji Suzuki, Kouichiro Harada, Hiroshi Yamada, Kenji Okamoto and Akihide Takami won the Outstanding Technical Paper Award for Study on low temperature oxidation of diesel particulate matters by oxygen storage component for the catalyzed diesel particulate filter.

2007

Daisuke Shimo won the Asahara Science Award for Emission Reduction in Diesel Engines through Large-Scale Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)* and Intake Air Cooling.
Tsutomu Shigenaga and Toshihiro Yoshida won the Technological Development Award for Development and Commercialization of Environmentally Friendly High Uniformity Electrodeposition Paint.

2006

Taeko Shimizu won the Asahara Award of Merit in Technology for Long-Term Achievements in Research and Development on Vehicle Emission Analysis Techniques and Noxious Substance Reduction Techniques.
Katsuya Nishiguchi, Toshiyuki Gendo, Kenji Takase, Yohei Shoji and Kunihiko Tao won the Technological Development Award for Development of Iron-Aluminium Spot Friction Welding Technology.

Mazda 787B 1991 Winning Car Returns to Le Mans After 20 Years

2011 marks the 20th anniversary of Mazda's victory in the world's most demanding endurance race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 1991, Mazda became the first and only Japanese car manufacturer to win the race. In celebration of this anniversary, and at the invitation of the event organizers, the Automobile Club de L'Ouest (ACO), Mazda will demonstrate the winning Mazda 787B on the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France on Saturday, June 11, 2011, before the 24-hour race begins.

The 79th 24-Hours of Le Mans is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. (local time) on Saturday, June 11, 2011, and finish at the same time on the following day. Mazda plans to hold the demonstration of the 787B racecar on the Circuit de la Sarthe at 12:30 p.m. on June 11. Additionally, the 787B will also take part in the Driver's Parade through the Le Mans city center on Friday June 10.

The Mazda 787B became the first and only Japanese car, and rotary-engine car, to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Jointly developed by Mazda and Mazdaspeed, the organization that managed Mazda's racing program, the 787B had a chassis designed to meet Group C racing car technical regulations and was powered by a four-rotor rotary engine that produced 700 horsepower. Due to a change in the race regulations, 1991 was to become the last year that a rotary-engine car could participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. At the last chance, after 17 years of effort, Mazda finally realized its long-held dream to take the overall victory at Le Mans. This victory was not Mazda's alone, but the result of long years of hard work by Mazdaspeed, the drivers, suppliers and the many others involved.

Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda's representative director, chairman of the board, president and CEO, said, "Mazda is founded on a desire to 'never stop challenging.' This spirit brings Mazda Group employees together across the globe, and it inspires us to achieve the demanding goals we set ourselves. Exactly 50 years ago, in 1961, Mazda commenced development of the rotary engine. The road from this beginning until our 1991 victory at Le Mans, and on to our current SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY development program, is built upon our spirit of challenge. 2011 is set to be another landmark year for the entire Mazda Group, as we enter our SKYACTIV era with the global introduction of our next-generation vehicles."

Since 1991, the winning Mazda 787B has mostly been on display at the Mazda Museum in Hiroshima, Japan. In preparation for the demonstration at Le Mans, Mazda has carefully restored the winning 787B racecar back to driving condition for the first time since its post-race overhaul in 1991. The work was carried out by current Mazda employees who participated in the company's original Le Mans Challenge Project, along with engineers from Mazda's subsidiary engineering company Mazda E&T. The restored 787B has been tested by one of Mazda's in-house top gun drivers, and its performance has been confirmed by former Mazda factory drivers Yoshimi Katayama, Takashi Yorino and Yojiro Terada at Mazda's Mine Proving Ground in western Japan.

As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, various members of the 1991 Mazda team will also return to Le Mans. The winning driver Johnny Herbert (England) will be joined by 1991 Mazda drivers David Kennedy (Ireland), Pierre Dieudonné (Belgium) and other team members.

Mazda SKYACTIV Technology wins Fleet Award

Mazda has won the Fleet World Honours' Innovation Award for its SKYACTIV technologies. Mazda accepted the award at the Royal Automobile Club in London's Pall Mall on 11 May 2011. Fleet World Honours annually go to vehicle manufacturers, service companies and individuals who achieve the highest possible level of excellence in their sector.

Europe's first Mazda SKYACTIV vehicle will premiere at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. It will employ traditional technologies - instead of expensive electric or hybrid systems - as a solution to high fuel prices and ever-stricter emission standards throughout Europe. SKYACTIV will achieve this by greatly improving engine efficiency, using all-new lightweight transmissions, revolutionary stop-start technology, lighter and stronger chassis systems and superior aerodynamics. This holistic approach to car development will achieve breakthroughs in compression ratio and exterior designing, while retaining Mazda's trademark Zoom-Zoom driving fun.

Delivering such an improvement using existing technology has won Mazda the Fleet World Honours 2011 Innovation Award. At the presentation, judging panel chairman (and Fleet World editor) Steve Moody said: "The introduction of these technologies will result not only in major reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for all Mazda models, but will also ensure that Mazda's sustainable Zoom-Zoom strategy can continue to provide fuel-efficient, low-emission motoring for the most enthusiastic company-car drivers."

In Europe, Mazda already offers fleet customers an appealing line-up of fun-to-drive cars with low cost of ownership and excellent residual values. "This will improve even further," said Christian Blank, Director European Fleet Operations, "with the introduction of SKYACTIV vehicles and make the Mazda portfolio even more attractive to business customers across Europe."

900,000th Mazda MX-5 to set new Guinness World Record

Total production of Mazda Motor Corporation's MX-5 sports car reached 900,000 units on February 4, 2011. This significant milestone was achieved 21 years and 10 months after mass production of the first-generation MX-5 commenced in April 1989. The MX-5 was initially certified by Guinness World Records as the world's "Best selling two-seater sports car" when production reached 531,890 units in May 2000. Guinness updated the record when production passed 700,000 and 800,000 units, respectively. Currently Mazda is reapplying to Guinness World Records to have the record updated to 900,000 units.

During the 1960s and 1970s, numerous lightweight and fun-to-drive sports cars offered nimble handling and free-spirited open-air motoring. In the 1980s, Mazda decided to resurrect this spirit with a new roadster for the modern age. Using the latest engineering techniques, Mazda developed the MX-5 and introduced it in February 1989 as a reminder that driving could still be fun despite ever-stricter safety and quality standards. To this day, the MX-5 remains the longest-running nameplate in Mazda's global lineup.

Nobuhiro Yamamoto, programme manager of the current MX-5, said, "Since Mazda launched the original MX-5, it has undergone two complete product redesigns and a series of upgrades. Its enduring success is due to the strong support it enjoys from MX-5 fans around the world. Going forward, I will strive to keep the MX-5's spirit alive while evolving it into a car that will be loved by even more people."

Mazda's senior managing executive officer in charge of development, Seita Kanai, said, "More than 20 years have passed since the first-generation Mazda MX-5 was born. During this time, society and vehicles themselves have changed significantly. Responding to environmental issues and the depletion of the Earth's natural resources has become increasingly important for all automakers. As part of its environmental efforts, Mazda announced its new SKYACTIV technologies last year. Currently, we are pushing forward with the development of future products that will incorporate these technologies. Many of the elements that go into our SKYACTIV technologies, such as comprehensive weight reduction, are based on the long years of development work that have gone into the MX-5. Indeed, the guiding principle behind the SKYACTIV technologies - to build cars that are fun to drive - is perfectly embodied by the MX-5."

"As we head toward the next production milestone of one million units," Kanai continued, "Mazda is committed to further evolving the MX-5. We will refine its fun-to-drive character and further enhance its environmental and safety capabilities. As Mazda passes its 91st birthday, we are turning our sights toward our 100th anniversary. In the years ahead, alongside its loyal fan base, we will continue to cherish the MX-5 as a symbol of the Mazda brand."

All-new Mazda5 - Even more Family Friendly

The all-new Mazda5 will hit dealer showrooms for January 2011 sales. Priced from €25,495* and equipped with a new low-emissions diesel engine, Mazda's 7-seat offering looks set to be at the top of shopping lists for those looking for a versatile family car.

The previous generation 5 was a success worldwide with over 500,000 units finding homes, as Mazda were the first company to introduce rear sliding doors (perfect for those tight car park spaces) onto a car in the compact Multi Activity Vehicle (MAV) segment.

Rear sliding doors and the 7-seat configuration which made this car so popular continue with the new model. Second and third row seats can be easily folded into a variety of seating configurations with Mazda's clever Karakuri seating system, including a flat 1,485 litre space for transporting bulky items. Users will also enjoy the 45 storage compartments and power sliding doors on the Sport model.

Long journeys are less of a chore as the interior comfort levels have been enhanced with larger and wider seats. The Mazda5 has a new dashboard, steering wheel and centre console providing a more premium look-and-feel.

The introduction of a 1.6-litre (115ps) diesel engine will greatly appeal to Irish buyers as the 13% improvement in C02 emissions drops the Mazda5 into Road Tax Band B (€225). Combined fuel economy of 5.2L/100kms (54mpg) marks a 15% improvement from the previous model's 2.0-litre diesel engine, whilst the six-speed gearbox makes for more refined motorway cruising.

The new Mazda family face has been introduced into the front of the car, whilst the 'Nagare'-flow design language not only provides a stronger and more sporty look, it also improves aerodynamics and engine cooling.

Being a family car, safety was a priority during the Mazda5's development. Side door impact beams now use a double-hat shape that adds greater strength. Pedestrian safety measures are improved by enhancements to the bonnet and front bumper.

Safety features such as ABS Anti-Lock Braking System, EBD electronic brake force distribution, brake assist, traction control system, DSC Dynamic Stability Control, Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), front, side, and curtain airbags (for all 3 rows) are all standard.

Mazda is offering a wider specification range with four models to choose from. The range topping Mazda5 Sport model equipment highlights include: leather seats, 17" alloys, power sliding doors and heated seats.

The company expects the Executive SE model to be a large seller, with an impressive list of standard equipment including: Bluetooth, climate control, rear parking sensors, cruise control and 16" alloys.

All new Mazda cars come with a 3-year or 100,000 km manufacturer warranty and 3-years European Roadside Assistance.

*Metallic / mica paint and dealer-related charges extra

Mazda3 is Best in Class in J.D. Power Survey

Mazda3 was awarded first place in the all-important European compact class on the latest customer satisfaction study conducted by the US research institute J.D. Power. In the largest survey of Germany's automobile market, Mazda3 scored 85.6 percent for overall customer satisfaction - ahead of the Mercedes A-Class with 84.8 percent and the Hyundai i30, which scored 84 percent.

Customer satisfaction of German car owners was calculated from answers given in four categories of questions - Quality/Dependability, Vehicle Appeal, Service and Operating Costs. All categories carry the same weight, and together form the J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI).

In the rankings that reflect customer satisfaction for individual car brands, Mazda achieved an average of 83.1 percent. This ranked fourth on the list of 25 brands, and once again outperformed the industry average of 81.3 percent.

This year's J.D. Power CSI was based on a poll of about 16,500 German car owners, who were asked to evaluate their automobiles, which were on average two years old. Results for all customer satisfaction categories, 25 nameplates and 102 car-lines will be published in detail in the July 2010 issue of Germany's AUTO TEST on 25 June 2010.

The Mazda3, Ireland's favourite Mazda model, has posted healthy sales growth in 2010 thanks to its acclaimed reputation of reliability. With the new 2010 model, Mazda engineers were keen to maintain the quality and reliability synonymous with the previous Mazda3. The car was tested globally at 20 locations in 11 countries and was driven a total of 175,000km in durability testing.

The most popular engine in the Mazda3 range is the 1.6 diesel. Sitting in the lowest road tax band A (€160 per annum), this diesel unit is the natural choice for Irish drivers offering plenty real-world power and torque, while averaging just 4.3L/100km (65.7mpg).

Reliability, low running costs and the superior build-quality of Mazda models have been highlighted by the industry awards for the Japanese manufacturer so far this year. Mazda3's success comes on the back of the Mazda MX-5 rated as 'Best Sports Car' in the J.D. Power Survey, while the Mazda6 scooped 'Best Estate Car' in the 2010 Fleet World Honours.

Mazda2 Sensu - A lot more car for less than you think

Irish car buyers this year are looking to purchase more fuel efficient vehicles with lower running costs. Just under half of all cars sold so far in this year slot into C02 Band B.

While the trend is towards purchasing a smaller car, it does not mean you have to compromise on practicality and driving performance.

One of the stars of this segment has been the stylish Mazda2. Mazda, with its renowned reputation for building highly-quality, reliable cars, with stunning driving performance, have been taking sales from some of the larger players in the segment.

Mazda has announced the launch of the Mazda2 Sensu. Sensu, a Japanese term that is used to describe the folding fan and its ability to create a breeze with practicality, beauty and style.

The Mazda2 Sensu model offers prospective customers over €3000 of extra equipment for only €1000 above the entry level Comfort model. Specification upgrades includes: Air conditioning, 15" alloy wheels, steering wheel controls, extra roof and side airbags, and electric folding heated door mirrors and many more features.

The combination of enhanced equipment, Mazda's renowned reliability and build quality and low running costs makes the Mazda2 hard to overlook for those in the market for a small car.

In every respect, the Mazda2 is a unique and ground-breaking vehicle. Not only is it sporty looking, it also sets a new benchmark for lightweight construction, being at least 100kg lighter than its predecessor. This is a reflection of a new focus at Mazda on offering cars that have less impact on the environment.

The Mazda2 driving performance delivers on the promise made from its sporty exterior design. Delivering 15% more power (86hp) over the Comfort version, open road performance is superb. The driver feels connected with this nimble car, while the chassis settings ensure the car feels stable yet fun through the corners.

With a lightweight yet rigid body construction, this generation Mazda2 uses less fuel and produces far fewer CO2 emissions than its predecessor. The Mazda2 Sensu delivers 5.1L/100kms (54MPG) while yearly road tax costs €225 thanks to the low C02 output of 119g.

The Mazda2 Sensu has a roomy interior, despite the relatively compact size of the car. Interior features include leather steering wheel and gear lever, split folding seats and handy storage compartments include a unique magazine rack in the glove compartment, front door pockets with space for a half-litre bottle and an A4 atlas, and three compartments in the dashboard for smaller items.

On the inside, Mazda's sporty driving pedigree is invoked with a dark keynote colour contrasts nicely with white instruments, silver accents, a three-spoke steering wheel similar to the iconic Mazda MX-5 roadster.

The Mazda2 delivers some of the B-segment's best crash safety achieving the highest possible ranking of five stars on Euro-NCAP testing. Its superior passive safety package includes six airbags, ABS, electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and emergency brake assist.

*Price excludes Dealer related charges.

Model shown may not be to Ireland specification. Colours and some exterior and/or interior elements may differ on screen from the actual model.

Hiroshima, 29 March 2010. Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and Mazda Motor Corporation have reached an agreement on the supply under license of hybrid technology used in the Toyota Prius.

Leveraging this agreement, Mazda plans to combine the hybrid system with its next-generation SKY engine that is currently under development, and develop and manufacture a hybrid vehicle in Japan. Mazda is aiming to commence sales of a hybrid vehicle starting in Japan by 2013.

Positioning response to environmental issues as a management priority, TMC began sales of the Prius, the world's first mass-production hybrid vehicle, in 1997. Since then, over 2.3 million TMC-produced hybrid vehicles have been delivered to customers in over 70 countries and regions.

TMC recognizes the importance of benefiting the environment by encouraging the popularization of its eco-friendly technologies, which are represented by its hybrid systems. Accordingly, TMC has announced that it will consider requests from other companies to supply hybrid technology.

Based on its long-term vision for technology development, Sustainable Zoom-Zoom, Mazda aims to increase the average fuel economy of Mazda vehicles sold globally by 30 percent by 2015, compared to its 2008 level. In order to offer all of its customers driving pleasure as well as outstanding eco-friendly and safety performance, Mazda is implementing a Building Block Strategy.
Under this strategy, Mazda will enhance the core aspects of its vehicles - including engines, transmissions and weight reduction - and then progressively add electric devices such as idling stop, regenerative braking and hybrid systems.

Through this partnership, each company intends to offer technologies and products with outstanding environmental benefits to as many people as possible.

Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that the new Mazda6 has just been awarded the five-star maximum rating by the European New Car Assessment Programme* (Euro NCAP) in its 2009 combined safety performance test.

For 2009, Euro NCAP has implemented a new assessment system that awards a single overall vehicle safety rating composed from scores achieved in four areas of assessment: Adult Occupant Protection, Child Protection, Pedestrian Protection and Safety Assist. The Mazda6 is Mazda's first model tested under the revised evaluation framework, which makes the five-star result all the more impressive.

Seita Kanai, Mazda's Senior Managing Executive Officer in charge of R&D, said "Mazda6's maximum safety rating from Euro NCAP is a reflection of the progress Mazda has made in harmonizing driving pleasure with safety and environmental performance under the 'Sustainable Zoom-Zoom' plan. Going forward, Mazda will strive to fulfil our corporate social responsibilities by further advancing our eco-friendly and safety technologies."

Other Mazda models that have received five star ratings in Euro NCAP tests include the Mazda5 in September 2005 and the Mazda2 in December 2007. Both received the highest score for Adult Occupant Protection.

The first-generation Mazda6 combined unique and attractive styling with exceptional driving performance. The new Mazda6 has further developed these characteristics and added substantially enhanced safety performance that complies with the world's strictest safety standards.
* Euro NCAP is an independent agency comprised of the transport authorities of European countries. It has awarded automotive safety ratings since 1997.

Mazda2 achieves remarkable 82mpg in Recent Irish Economy Run

A team of drivers in the Mazda/Topaz Drive Safe, Drive Smart campaign have achieved an amazing 3.4l/100kms (82 miles per gallon) in a road test aimed at highlighting the benefits of driving safely and more fuel efficiently.

The team of Johnny Horan and Alastair Lindsey achieved the hugely impressive figures in a 1.3l petrol Mazda2 on a 106.2 Kilometre route between Kill in Co Kildare and Templeogue in Dublin. The route was designed to reflect real world driving conditions with a mixture motorway, urban and rural roads.

The Mazda/Topaz Drive Safe, Drive Smart initiative is aimed at encouraging drivers to drive safely at moderate speeds and to adopt smarter driving techniques which make a dramatic impact on a vehicle's fuel economy.

Seven teams competed against the eventual winners of Johnny and Alastair. The successful pair deployed 'Smart Driving' Techniques such as changing up early through the gears, keeping a smooth style of driving of easing into acceleration and looking ahead to avoid any sudden breaking.

Achieving the phenomenal 82 mpg, a delighted Johnny Horan explained: "Thanks to the lightweight strategy used during this car's development, the Mazda2 is designed to deliver excellent fuel economy and reduced C02 emissions. We simply adopted the practical smart driving techniques to exploit the Mazda2's attributes as highly fuel efficient car. All motorists can lower their fuel bills and drive safer by adopting these common sense techniques."

"The Drive Safe, Drive Smart initiative demonstrates running costs for the Mazda2 drivers are kept to a minimum", enthuses David McGonigle, MD Mazda Motor Ireland. "The excellent fuel economy and yearly road tax of €150 is a reflection of a new focus at Mazda on offering cars that have less impact on the environment."

Top 'Smart' Tips for Increasing Fuel Economy

• Change up early through the gears. Shift up between 1.700 and 2.000 revolutions (depending on vehicle)
• Ensure you adopt a smooth style of driving - ease into acceleration
• Avoid tailgating. Keep your distance between vehicles to ensure you brake smoothly
• Reduce your speed, driving at 110 KPH uses 15% more fuel than at 80 KPH
• Use Cruise Control for Motorway driving to maintain a constant speed, as it can prove 7% average fuel savings
• If you have stopped for more than 40 seconds (e.g. level crossing), save fuel by switching off the engine
• Use the Air Conditioning sparingly as it can reduce fuel consumption by as much as 20%
• Check tire pressure regularly
• Ensure your vehicle is serviced regularly

New Mazda2 earns 5-Star Ranking from Euro NCAP

The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has awarded the all-new Mazda2 five stars for adult occupant protection.

Thanks to a lightweight, but strong body using high and ultra high tensile steels, the new Mazda2 proved itself amongst the bests in the segment on Euro NCAP crash tests. It scored an impressive total of 34 points for adult protection and the highest possible ranking of five stars.

Not only are adults given optimal protection in the new Mazda2, children are as well. With a four-star ranking for child occupant protection with 37 points, Mazda's new sub-compact becomes one of the few cars in its segment to achieve this level of child protection. And for pedestrian safety, Mazda2 achieved an admirable 18 points and two-star ranking.

The lightweight body due to weight-saving measures has made the new Mazda2 a trendsetter for fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions. It delivers some of the B-segment's lowest fuel consumption (the standard power 1.3-litre petrol uses just 5.1 litres per 100 km combined) while producing just 119 g/km of CO2.

The new Mazda2 is not only one of the lightest, most fuel-efficient, best-looking, and fun to drive sub-compacts in Europe - it is also officially one of the safest.

Prices for the Mazda2 range begin at €13,495 (excl Dealer related charges).
