Mazda believes cars should be fun to drive, and we have a long history of doing that our own way. We mass-produced the rotary engine used in our legendary RX sports cars and built the world's best-selling, lightweight roadster, the Mazda MX-5. With our all-new compact crossover SUV, the Mazda CX-5, we believe we've done it again.

When we began the development of our next-generation SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, we asked ourselves a simple question: "How can we continue to make driving fun, while significantly improving fuel efficiency?" To do this, we began completely from scratch, re-engineering all the major components - the engine, the transmissions, the chassis and the body.

It's a known fact that 70-90% of the energy produced in a conventional engine's combustion process is lost. So we revisited the internal combustion engine, and tried to perfect it, starting with designing a single ideal cylinder. In our petrol engines, we've attained higher compression ratios and in our diesels, lower ratios than ever. Both engines, with either automatic or manual transmissions, have been made lighter and more compact, helping more power get to the wheels of the car.

But we didn't stop there. Versus traditional engineering approaches, we've shaved-off nearly 100 kilos of weight, while increasing strength and rigidity. We've re-engineered our transmissions and benchmarked them against the Mazda MX-5. We've created an ideal body and optimised the chassis for a balanced and responsive ride. When we combine all of these innovative improvements, they deliver a safer, more stable, yet agile driving experience.

Developing SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY to increase both efficiency and driving fun may not be the easiest way to build new cars. But it's the way we build them. And it always will be.

Experience the difference of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and Kodo design in the all-new Mazda CX-5 at the IAA Frankfurt, Hall 3.1 A22.
