Less weight, more fun to drive
At Mazda, we challenged the conventional way of thinking that says that to make a car faster, you need a bigger engine. We came at it from a different angle and challenged ourselves to create a Mazda2 that was 100kg lighter than its predecessor. How? By analysing thousands of components and then re-engineering every one that could be optimised.
-
Stage 1: Engine and Suspension
Our dedication resulted in a suspension system that’s approx 13kg lighter than before and gives a smoother, more agile and sportier ride – without compromising safety. The engine, too, not only feels livelier and more responsive but also offers greater fuel economy and lower CO 2 emissions.
Weight Saving Total = 23.2kg
Acceleration Performance = +1.9%
Cornering Performance= +1.0%
Fuel Economy Saving= +4.4%
-
Stage 2: Bodyshell
Smaller body dimensions and the use of some new materials, plus more high- and ultra-high-tensile steel sheeting, created a supremely rigid bodyshell that’s 23kg lighter with superior collision safety.
Weight Saving Total = 62.2kg
Acceleration Performance = +5.0%
Cornering Performance= +2.8%
Fuel Economy Saving= +11.8%
-
Stage 3: Interior
Nothing escaped our attention. We even redesigned the door-mounted speakers and made the gear lever and knob lighter, shedding a total of 26.7kg across the whole interior. From the highly adjustable driver’s seat and steering wheel, to the optimal positioning of the gear lever, to the easy access luggage compartment – we not only looked at the weight, but also considered the driver's comfort and convenience every step of the way.
Weight Saving Total = 88.9kg
Acceleration Performance = +7.1%
Cornering Performance= +4.0%
Fuel Economy Saving= +16.9%
-
Stage 4: Exterior
Every kg counts! In total we shed 11.1kg from the exterior. The new bonnet mechanism has saved 0.69kg, while optimised latches and regulator motors in the doors reduced the weight further by 1.82kg. Its enhanced aerodynamics and striking looks emphasise the sporty character of the new Mazda2.
Weight Saving Total = 100.0kg
Acceleration Performance = +8.0%
Cornering Performance= +4.5%
Fuel Economy Saving= +19.0%

The result?
A car with greater linear acceleration, livelier response and a performance feel that's ideal for day-to-day driving. It's also more responsive, for greater manoeuvrability in town and enhanced cornering on twisting country roads. What's more, CO 2 emissions are lower – likewise running costs, as fuel economy has been improved.
- Acceleration
- A lighter car means a faster car that’s more exciting to drive. The new Mazda2 can effortlessly reach 100km/h in 12.6 secs. That’s 8% faster than its predecessor. Increased agility, responsiveness and safety all add up to the perfect day-to-day supermini that’s designed for some serious fun.
- Cornering
- A lighter car offers easier, more nimble manoeuvrability in town; while the improved cornering on winding country roads is an experience to savour. Direct, intuitive handling and sporty responsiveness make you feel totally at one with the road – inspiring confidence at every twist and turn.
- Fuel Economy
- A lighter car means greater fuel economy. The weight-saving body structure is up to 19% more fuel efficient than the previous model with comparable engines. So, with lower running costs, fun-to-drive performance and no compromise on collision safety, right weight is definitely the right choice.
